Building anew reveals treasures of old
The creation of a new footbridge into Carmarthenshire’s Kidwelly Castle has led to the discovery of some even more ancient activity on the site.
The castle and its medieval delights were closed to the public throughout the winter due to a major conservation project. As part of the conservation, it was necessary to undertake archaeological excavations in the gatehouse.
Among the finds were historic cobbled surfaces a foot below the current ground level. Experts believe the cobbles may have formed the floor of a gatehouse that predates the 15th-century structure visitors see today.
Kidwelly is managed by Cadw, the Welsh Assembly Government’s historic environment service.
